As Head of School, I am delighted to announce that the HEAlth caRe needs of the Deaf (HEARD) project led by Professor Uma Palanisamy are one of the three recipients of the 2023 Nature Awards for Inclusive Health Research. The project addresses healthcare communication needs, healthcare access and health promotion of the Deaf community in Malaysia. The work her team has been doing has left a strong impression on the judges’ panel, showing high-quality research with an inclusive approach leading to greater health equity. The in-person award ceremony will take place on the 26th of July in Sao Paolo, Brazil, where travel expenses and accommodation will be covered by Springer Nature.

“Our mobile app addresses a critical issue: Deaf individuals face barriers to accessing healthcare due to low health literacy and limited communication options. By connecting them with off-site interpreters via video and providing health information in sign language, we are breaking down these barriers and improving health outcomes for this vulnerable population, said Professor Uma Palanisamy.”

The Nature Awards for Inclusive Health Research is considered impressive for several reasons. Nature is one of the most renowned and respected scientific journals in the world and it typically involves a rigorous selection process. Its focus is on research that has the potential to make a significant impact on scientific knowledge or societal issues. In addition to recognition, Nature awards come with financial support and often provide opportunities for researchers to connect with other leading scientists, attend conferences or workshops, and present their work to a wider audience.

The Inclusive Health Research Awards is established by Nature Awards in partnership with Takeda to celebrate those who are driving a more inclusive approach to health research and, in doing so, promote a future of greater health equity globally.
